Erik was born and raised in San Diego, California, and wisely spent his youth going to the beach and surfing. He attended California State University, San Diego, earning his degree in Political Science in 1973. Duty called, and he enrolled in McGeorge School of Law, obtaining his Juris Doctorate degree in 1976. After taking and passing the bar immediately after graduation, Erik became a member of the California State Bar in 1976, and began working as workers’ compensation defense attorney in San Diego for Clifford Sweet’s firm. Missing Northern California, Erik moved back to Sacramento in 1977 and began working for Kevin Twohy’s firm. He formed his partnership with Kevin Twohy and Alan Darneille in 1979, and has remained a shareholder owner ever since.
Erik became a Certified Specialist in workers’ compensation in 1983. Since beginning his practice, Erik has represented many public agencies before both the WCAB and in PERS disability retirement cases. He has coordinated workers’ compensation defense with civil and administrative actions on behalf of public agency clients facing multiple actions stemming from the same factual base. For the past ten years, Erik has, in addition to “normal” worker compensation defense, provided insurance coverage analysis and opinions for major worker compensation carriers. Erik appears throughout the state before the WCAB and arbitrators in coverage disputes on behalf of those carriers.
Along the way, Erik served as president of Valley Industrial Claims Association, was named Defense Attorney of the Year by the California Compensation Defense Attorneys Association, and continues to serve as both a Board appointed Arbitrator in WCAB actions. Erik also works as an Agreed Arbitrator hired by local attorneys to resolve coverage, contribution and complex case problems.
Away from work, Erik enjoys an active lifestyle of competitive rowing, skiing, bicycling, and medal winning home wine making. He no longer works on Fridays. Life is good.
